Schubarth. 6/13, 6/20

by cr1ck3e

On Sunday, June 13th. MCP and I made our first trip up to Schubarth trail.. after 3 consecaspengroveutive days of rain. We went in search of a good time and mud. We found both. Schubarth has a giant narrowpathY in it. The decision was made to take the right side, which lead to a fair amount more of splashing. Schubarth is ranked a 3-4 difficulty rating, and the 4 comes on the right side of the trail. cloudytrail

There;s a nice dead end that gives a pretty photo op, there’s a pretty meadow, and ultimately if you take the right turns, you will end up looking out over the USAF Academy.

The downside of Schubarth is, its not a through trail, and so you end up having tthelookouto turn around and go back the way you came. The upside of that is, well if there are puddles, this gives you ample opportunity to hit said puddles.. twice.

There are groves of aspen, there are climbs and decenparkedatoverlookts, one good rock to climb over and you’re there. It was a cloudy rainy day which killed the lookouts but, the fog presented a unique outlook everywhere.

In combination of the tight sptakethetrailots in the trail, its also tight over head. We ended up adjusting every light on MCP’s beautiful light bar at least once.. And even my tOj ended up taking a bit of the trail home with her. “Mind your head” is something that’s often said in situations we find on this trail.  Before we begin thegirlson the Schubarth experience from Sunday 6/20 – we’ll add in a couple last photographs from our cloudy day on the 13th.

Sunday June 20th.

Schubarth once again. This time, not much mud, but lots and lots of dust. We did of course, the same side of the hill, only this time we also tackled the other side of it, which again, dead ends. The dead end occurs at the base of a really steep incline. You can climb the hill, yes. As you will see in the following video, both rai and I decided to climb it, mcp sat this one out. Once at the top of the hill, the trail goes on for a bit, but gets very narrow. After wedging toj between two trees last year, we came to the conclusion that the continuation of the trail is for 4wheelers, dirt bikes and hikers only. The left side of the Y provides a different set of scenery and challenges. There are some big rocks to go through, and its very narrow at times. Both sides are a wonderful drive.

We started off the day with a nice jaunt through Garden of the Gods out of CO Springs, down Rampart, across to Schubarth, both sides, back to Rampart, over to 315, down to Mt. Herman, and back down into Monument. A lovely tour of the hills. Thanks to rai for most of the footage from today, and from here out, there should be plenty more to come!

Cargo Netting

by: cr1ck3e

So I’ve been wanting a set of cargo nets for the ass end of my opened up summer love jeep, and I’ve found only a couple places that sell then. The first one, I decided upon last summer, but put it off due to monetary compensation. This year, right before I ordered them, I found another company that made and sold this cargo netting. This company is Dirty Dog 4x4. Their  product looked better, and though it cost more, I dropped the neceddlogo2ssary coin to make the power of purchase. Hilarity ensues.

First off, after a week of backorder, my shipment was set to go. But then it didn’t ship because the bank thought it was a fraudulent charge. So after some time on the phone with Mike @ Dirty Dog, and with my bank, we got it straight and the product was on the wagon to the grand old US of A. That’s right, this product marks the 3rd good thing to come out of Canadia, and that is a super thing!packaging

On to the installation. I received the package and checked it out, upon inspection, its not fragile, so there was no need for packing peanuts or anything.. but the wrapping was nice, it was divided up into two pouches, one held the two side windows, one the back. The directions were also in there. Not that they couldn’t have been figured out, but it was much nicer anyways. Furthermore, the directions were in English, not Engrish. There were pictures.. which were color! It looked more like the people there printed it off their computer fresh and stuffed it into the packaging before it went out.. Inetrightfirstpiecet does not look like something that has been copied a trillion times over. This is a very good thing.

The directions state to install either window first, and each one is clearly marked with a tag. The installation is simple. velcro strap which is very stout wraside2completeps around the cage, through the clip and down. Simple as hell. The straps hold the clips for the back window to be able to be lifted and secured easily. I should state at this point, I should say a few precautionary things. First off, I had to take my Safari top loose to the front to put these on. This was simple enough. Also, I had to take my deck cover loose as well. Also easy as pie. Finally, I had to take the shovenetupclosebackl off.

Then the third and last piece. It snaps in place to the side windows, and then at the top between the speakers on your roll cage, if you have a TJ at least, its just like the side windows. Same velcro, yet sturdy straps to hold it in place. A couple go around the top center bar of your cage, which was the reason I had to take netupcloseloose the Safari top all the way to the windshield. Once everything seemed in place, the tightening began. This too was an easy process, just had to remember to tighten each side evenly so the straps didn’t look too funky.

Following the tightening, the installation was complete. It was really rather easy, and netonleftI’ve now spent a week with them on. I’m as happy with them now as I was the day they came in. Now for the downsides. If you run a set up like mine, you’ll run into these issues. The Netting sits a little lower then the ass end of the netonrightbackdeck cover.. this makes the boot that goes around the cage a little scrunched up, but I don’t think it looks too different that way. The Safari top still fits on the exact same way, so no troubles there. All in all, a great prodnetonrightuct, worth the cost of the thing. Looks fantastic. And customer service from Mike at Dirty Dog was a pretty chill guy, who knew how to keep good contact with his customers. A pleasure doing business with  this company, I would highly recommend them for any Jeep owner.  This is a great product, and I’ve even tested it to the full extent of its usefulness and stuck my dogs in the back seat  a couple days ago. Worked like a champ.

I then drove it about for a little bit, no any real extra noise to deal with.. just fantastic. I can’t tell you enough how pleased I am for shovelremountthis product, it does not seem over priced or uncool.   If you’re thinking: Maybe I’ll do that… hear the voice of cr1ck3e reason, and listen. The final step was to remount the shovel and I suddenly found myself complete. All in all, took 30 minutes to an hour to complete. Cheers!

The Lightbar

by mcp

Jeep Mod Number 3: Light Bar
So what does a jeep need to be a bad ass jeep.
Lift - check
Wheels - check
32 inch tires - check
Fog lights - check
Sound system - check
Lights lots of lights -
well that brings me to jeep mod number 3 light bar.
lights

I bought my jeep fully loaded only missing 3 things.
Hi lift jack which I promptly bought because well lets face it …its a necessity. Without it I can’t change a flat tire.
A skull shifter knob… cause well… stock shifter knob? Ha! Don't make me laugh.

Lightsbarmount
I personally think that a jeep needs to have a light bar. They look bad ass and well lets face it that's what any jeep owner is going for: a penile supplement.  So I decided to wrangle up the crew and install one. First major firstlightjeep mod and it was major. First things first I bought a 3 piece light bar off the internet. It was cheap too like $80 on amazon. Alas though, no lights came with it. So I rolled down to Autozone and picked up 4 off road only truck driving lighallonts. They are not hellas or super bright or extra spendy but they look awesome are well, with 4 added lights, they’re pretty bright too. So with all the parts and a basic understanding of installation I headed off to my friends house to do the install. Incase your wondering its because he has the tools and the garage,   apartment dwellings are not suited for installation. Now it was suppose to be a straight forward bolt on bar with all hardware included. Well that's where the justspots first hurdle came in to play. The sent the bard to me with metric bolts that didn't fit my standard jeep so off to the bolt store for new bolts. Success! We found the right bolts and managed  to get the bar mounted. Man she is sexy too. So the next hurdle is the wiring harness. justspotsfrontal the harness that came with the lights was about 4 feet to short so let the splicing commence. Luckily both of my two jobs incorporate wiring so splicing is a skill i not only posses but am proficient at. After spliceing 12 wires together thlituplefte wiring was complete. Mean while hurdle number 3 creeps  up on us. The holes in the bar for the lights were bigger then the bolts on the lights. So what to do well this was a simple one and props to my friend for mounting the lights. Just get some washers woot done. Now the bars on lights on wires done test time. 1 ... 2... 3 ... and wam bam thank you ma’am they worked woot. Now after another frielitupfrontalnd of mine got his dremmel on and cut the holes for the switches we got them mounted and the dash back together. SIX hours later 2 pizzas and a couple of smokes, tojs finally has her new eyes open. Isn't she pretty . All and all it wasn't hard to install now i just need a dark dirt road.onbutblurry

Broken!

by: rai

Assassins, sleepers, hit-men, rangers whatever name you want to slap on the enemies in the dark exist within auto mechanics.

My jeep has fooled me twice now with mysterious noises that we’re substantial and unidentifiable.

  1. In March of 10’, I had a pro-flow cat-back system installed as my exhaust system was making some annoying noises that i couldn’t fix and was rusted and ugly anyway. After they cut off the muffler, they asked “have you had an annoying rattle you couldn’t find?”. I quickly responded with a yes and muffler-dude was shaking the muffler in front of me. It sounded like a shaker you see in highschool bands, you know, that poor kid that stands there for 10 minutes and gets to shake that thing one time and then whacks the triangle for the climatic finish? Yeah, a fin within the muffler was broken and dancing around in there like fat kid that just won a life-time supply of twinkies. So, one rattle down, 342 to go.
  1. A week ago, May 31st 2010 I was cruising down to see my brother Jordan. Ohh, Jordan by the way really wants to buy a jeep, and will, he’s jeepless at the moment and I ask all to pray for his quick and seamless acquisition of a jeep.  Any way, Im off to see Jordan and as I’m be-boppin down the road with my left hand on the steering wheel and my right on the stick, I feel the entire drive train shift two inches to the right. Well......I was precise and colorful with my language never the less as I had no idea what had happened. As I’m cruising down to Jordans place I call him and let him know there’s a problem. We’re quick to take action, here’s my story.

We popped the hood and hot-damn, the passenger side motor mount was snapped and rolled. I guess all 130 ponies rockin’ out of this 4 banger are two much for stamped and bolted steel..........like I said, it’s a guess. =) I’ve got all the parts shops around town on speed dial so I start with Napa. Those astute gentlemen we’re quick to supply the wrong part...then argue with me about it being the wrong part. Well, none of those gangster wanna-be pieces of shit own a YJ, so they don’t know what they’re talking about. Let’s take this from the top:brkn

From 1987-1995 Jeep manufactured the YJ- The jeep with the square headlights. Yes, you’ve seen one. They’re everywhere. These series of jeeps we’re pumped out of the Canadan (not Canadian) factories. from 87’-92’ they came out of Brampton Ontario, 92’-95 out of the Toledo South Assembly plant. From 91’-94’, some engineer decided to lower the frame pylon on the passenger side an inch and require the motor mount to be larger and use a bracket or “cradle” that bolts on to the frame then the motor mount bolts on that. I don’t know why, but that’s whatbrkd1 happened.

So, I didn’t break a motor mount, what had been broken for years (rough guess as there was no clean break and it was rusted on the crack line) was the bracket. Yay!! Cool, no one sells brackets. You have to special order those bad boys. So, after napa displayed their..um...lack of knowledge, I resorted to the other options. Autozone, Schucks, O’Rieleys, Checkers, Advanced Auto parts with no avail. It was time for some research. A 600lb tie-down strap held my engine in place for a week. Through research I brkd2 stumbled across www.browndogindustries.com These bod boys use grade 8 bolts, 20 ton pressed 3/16 steel and come with a lifetime warranty on specialty brackets that are all handmade. This bracket is not going to break..ever and it was under $50. They have great prices, awesome customer service, great instructions and fast free shipping. Uhh, they rock and if you need brackets buy from them.

Okay, so installing this new bracket is easy. Give you’re self about three hours. This is nothing more than working with wrenches.strapped

(This will require a floor jack)

1- Unplug your battery.

2- Remove serpentine belt (on the i4 found behind the power steering pump, if you have power steering)

3- Remove alternator

4- Unbolt engine mount

5- Lift engine (the pan will hold if you’re patient) with about 1-2 inches of clearance. Pay attention to the mount on the drivers side to make sure you’re not applying too much lift to thepart snap that one or else you’ll be replacing both.

6- Remove Broken Bracket from engine mount

7- install new bracket to engine mount

8- Re-seat the down facing bolt through the pylon on the frame. (Lower jack for engine) You may need a breaker bar to help align the bolt to the frame as you’re lowering it---very slowly, partdtogthr

9- Tighten the four bolts that have to do with  the bracket and mount

    • Bottom bolt
    • Bolt coming up from the bracket
    • Bolt going down from the mount
    • Engine mount bolt facing front to back

10- Install alternator

11- Install Serpentine Beltinashop

12- Plug in battery

13- Get back to the trails!

Okay, there’s the quick recap of the bracket installation , it’s pretty easy. I was very fortunate as my friend Jordan’s brother Jason is a cerified GM mechanic and has quite the tool selection. Thanks for Jordan and Jason, especially Jason as he told me to stand there and look pretty.  fxdmntd

So, after this little snafu I learned that my bracket had been broken for some time and my engine’s just been jumping around in there making noise. Look closly on at your bracket, even if your mount is intact to make sure it’s not snapped. If you have a lot of engine rattle, this could be the suspect.

Thanks!! See you in the hills!

cr1ck3e’s tOj

The time has come for a write up of the original tOj. The One Jeep.. to rule them all. As everyone knows, one must always name a vehicle, I chose tOj. And I’ve had to explain why she is the one jeep, and I shall now do that for clarification.

When I spoke of buying a jeep, I was encouraged by multiple people, and finally made to decide that yes, this is a right move. So rai and i searched out and found 2 jeeps to look at.. one I was particularly interested in. So we went. And it looked great in the pictures.. not so much in real life. Too bad. AND on top of that.. they wouldn’t let me test drive it. So fuck those guys.

Then we went to the next jeep. Which had sold two days prior. So it was on to breakfast. Village Inn, where we sat and looked on our collective media devices to find the next one to go see. A few phone calls later and suddenly, it was looking like this.. this was not a great idea. Then, i decided to go to a place amaybe1called McCloskey Motors here in town, and we saw what was to become.. my.. destiny.

Let me say, this is not my first jeep. My love affair started at the ripe age of.. oh 13? My father asked me as i was approaching the age of a drivers license, what kind of car I would like to have when i turned the ripe old age of 16. I had already known. i said: “An old jeep!” and being the resourceful bastard my father is, he found that jeep, and she was a 1955 CJ5. That jeep, I named Pamela. Because lets face it.. I was 14 at this point, and Pamela Anderson was one of the hottest items on the market. But has she stopped being that? Besides the point. I learned many things with that jeep. That mud rules, snow is not bad either and that jeeps require many tears in order to complete anything on them. Blood. Sweat. Tears. The three main ingrediants of Jeeping/ Jeep ownership. I replaced many things on that jeep, a generator was swapped to alternator, a starter, a water pump, a clutch, much oil. I skinned the paint off and repainted her. I loved that jeep. She met her untimely demise in a Tbone car accident. During the down times of much working on her, I was driving a 1979 CJ5. Chevy 350 under the hood. HOOWAH!

After a 10 year break from Jeeping, I was back. I test drove tOj, and I loved her. I was impressed with how she drove, and how quiet jeeps had become in the time that i was away from them. I had to have her. They had to sell her. It was a match made in heaven. They sent me home with her. I was to have an “extended test drive” while they got thTest Drive1e financing straight. I took it back the day I was supposed to, they say to me “We don’t ahve it yet, but we will, I promise.. just give me more time” I say “Thats fine, I’m just supposed to have her back today.” They retort: “Fuck that, keep her. Don’t call us, we’ll call you.” Meanwhile, i found certain quirks about her. She had “Death Wobble” – It wasn’t fun. Hit about 50, hit a bump, and she shook like crazy until I slowed to 20.

After a solid 3 weeks of TRYING to get the financing, they finally got it. Holy cow, I have a jeep. Then the maintinence they agmudtoj1reed upon, like fixing the death wobble and making the check engine light turn off. So out of the girl for a week, and then it was back on like donkey kong! Here’s the specs. Shes a 2004 Wrangler SE 2.5 litre 4 cylinder engine., Thats right, who needs the 4.0? The interstate does, thats where she really struggles, but in the mud, shes a dream. She was bone stock, with 42k miles. But she needed some love.

It was summer, the full top had to go. So I ripped her top off. After which, I was going to get the Bikini Top, but went with the Safari Top instead, courtesy of SmiTOPLESS!1ttybilt. But, in true toj fashion, they gave me a top for the wrong year and then I had to ORDER one for the right year which took about a week. More One Jeep. Nothing’s easy. I also needed to complete the look I wanted by adding a deck cover. Who needs a back seat anyways?!

But the tires were getting bald, so I was on the warpath saving for new shoes.. BUT she needed to be taller first. Because i needed at least 32’s. So rather than spending the grand I didnt have on a suspension lift, I opted for the 2” body lift. Read up on it, looks good. Looks easy. Went to pick it up.. they had Lifted1to order it. This time though, it was only an hour away, so rather than have them deliver, I  went to pick it up at the warehouse in Denver. My good ol big  brother went with me. Seeing as how the windows were down Safari was on.. we both managed to get stung by the SAME WASP on the way there. That should’ve been an indication that we shouldn’t try anything more that day. But seeing as how we are hard headed, were we gonna stop? HELL NO! And we started the lift and it took.. some 13 hrs. Pain. In. The. Ass. Nothing’s easy with this Jeep, that is why she is the ONE jeep to rule them all.

Sosupercreepysteve2 I’m saving for wheels and tires. I only got tires.. I was saved up for the tires I wanted.. but not anymore. Driving one day.. pop goes a tire! NEW TIRES THE NEXT DAY! But no new wheels, and I still have that shitty ass Cooper on the spare. New tires are 32” BFK AT/KO ‘s. Ahh well. I of course, bought a badass shifter knob. Which was promply stolen. So I bought another, identical to it. I call him Super Creepy Steve. This one is verssnowdinion 2.0.

All in all, shes a new jeep, and hasn’t taken very much maintinence to keep rolling down the road. I’ve even found adverse weather conditions cannot stop the tOj. Due to the slow money and lack of access to trails in the winter, I difogoffd only one more mod to her, and that was the addition of fog lights. They too were a pain in the ass, for I could not get one to ground properly, Again, this jeep is much like my old CJ’s, and yet still through the blood sweat and tears, shes my love .

 IMG00560-20100227-2103

So there you have it, the final write up of the introductions of the the One Jeep family.

Oh and one more thing I should add.. Despite loving how a white jeep looks, she is patriot blue.

The End. As rai said: See you in hills.
